Image in the Wood – Summer School with Chris Daunt

Duration: 4 days

10:00 to 16:00 Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st August 2011

Horsley, Northumberland

Description:

Wood engraving & wood cut – two fascinating ways of making relief prints. Explore their similarities and differences and even combine them during this four day summer school with Chris Daunt.

Wood engraving is a highly detailed form of relief printmaking, capable of exquisite nuance and detail. Chris will show you how to use a variety of gravers to create marks in the end grain blocks that he cuts and prepares himself. Wood cuts, on the other hand, use of the plank or side grain that is cut with knives and gouges. This results in an image of strong contours, textures and the potential for great expressiveness of line. On this course you can try out both methods independently and have the opportunity to combine them if you wish. Chris will guide you through the cutting and printing process and offer advice on adapting your image ideas to these methods. Suitable for beginners and experienced artists who want to develop creatively in this area.

Horsley is just a few miles from Cherryburn - the birthplace of Thomas Bewick, the famous wood engraver. His home is now a working museum so, as part of the course, we will go on a trip to the museum and receive a guided tour and printing demonstration from the custodian.
