The history of Newcastle and Gateshead revolves heavily around the history of the River Tyne. The first known settlement here was the Roman settlement of Pons Aelius which served as a bridging point for the river. In later years the Tyne became a major centre for trade and industry. Its proximity to many of the north easts coal field brought prosperity to Tyneside and led to the development of shipbuilding and other heavy industries which too generated wealth. Today, the Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides create one of the most recognizable scenes in the region. The Tyne bridges, the Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art combine to create a highly photogenic cityscape, and one that is familiar internationally.

Starting from the Newcastle Quayside, your cruise will take you up river, almost immediately sailing under the Gateshead Millennium Bridge which will tilt for you. Having also passed under the Tyne Bridge, Swing Bridge and High Level Bridge there is a chance to see the impressive Dustan Staithes on the south bank of the river. The Quay to Countryside cruise takes two hours and travels upriver as far as Ryton Willows Nature Reserve and Newburn Countryside Park.

Cruises operate on Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays from June to September and on Sundays during October. Please contact us for availability and we can reserve a place on your chosen date. Alternatively you can buy your cruise as a gift voucher and reserve your place directly with the cruise operator.
