Further Details

The history of Newcastle and Gateshead revolves heavily around the history of the River Tyne. The first known settlement here was the Roman settlement of Pons Aelius which served as a bridging point for the river. In later years the Tyne became a major centre for trade and industry. Its proximity to many of the north east's coal fields brought prosperity to Tyneside and led to the development of shipbuilding and other heavy industries which too generated wealth. Today, the Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides create one of the most recognizable scenes in the region. The Tyne bridges, the Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art combine to create a highly photogenic cityscape, and one that is familiar internationally.

From Newcastle's Quayside you will sail under the superb Gateshead Millenium Bridge, which will tilt for you, and be afforded some great views of the Tyne's riverscape. Travelling down river, much of Newcastle's industrial past is on view. The Ouseburn Valley on the north bank of the Tyne once housed industries involved with pottery, flax, iron and lead. Under recent years the valley has experienced considerable regeneration and now synonymous with real ale, live music and the arts. Jarrow, Hebburn, Wallsend and Walker were large shipbuilding centres and you can still see a number of the shipyards that made Tyneside famous.

Further downriver you'll see the International Ferry Terminal, the Port of Tyne and the Fish Quay before Tynemouth Castle and Priory come into view. Tynemouth Priory was an important religious centre during the heyday of the Kingdom of Northumbria in the 7th century. Together with the Castle and the piers that mark the mouth of the river, it makes an impressive sight. At the piers the boat turns and you'll head back upstream to the Quayside. This cruise is complimented by a live commentary.
